The University of Michigan has launched ZEUS, a groundbreaking laser system that has set a new U.S. record by generating a 2-petawatt pulse. To put that into perspective, this power is 100 times greater than the total global electricity consumption - though it lasts only 25 millionths of a billionth of a second.

Housed in a highly shielded facility, ZEUS (Zettawatt-Equivalent Ultrashort pulse laser System) is more than just a technical marvel. It is designed to simulate extreme conditions found in the universe and explore quantum mechanics phenomena. Researchers are particularly focused on studying plasma physics, high-intensity light effects, and enhancing wakefield acceleration technology.
Backed by a $16 million investment from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF), ZEUS is now open to scientists across the country. It supports a wide range of experiments, including next-generation particle acceleration, cancer treatment through advanced laser therapy, and cutting-edge medical imaging technologies.
The first large-scale experiment at ZEUS is expected to begin later this year, marking a major step forward in the quest to unlock the frontiers of modern physics.
