After six months of my boss failing to repay me, I was frustrated and overwhelmed by financial pressure, so I quit my job. Now, I’m at a loss about how to recover my money.

I worked as an accountant at a small company specializing in manufacturing and installing rolling and sliding doors, where I had been employed for quite a long time. My job involved handling the company’s bank loans. To give some context about the company, it has been facing significant challenges in recent years—orders have plummeted, and finances have been unstable. In December 2024, the bank notified us that the company needed to renew a loan of $21,000 within the month.
After multiple unsuccessful attempts to reach the company’s director, the bank contacted me to remind us about the loan renewal. I discussed the situation with my boss, who admitted he couldn’t secure the funds. This would damage the company’s credibility with the bank. At the time, my family was setting aside money for some upcoming expenses. I offered to lend my boss the $21,000 to cover the loan renewal, on the condition that he repay me as soon as the bank disbursed the funds again. He agreed. The money was promptly transferred to the company’s account, and shortly after, the bank completed the disbursement of the $21,000.
However, after the bank disbursed the funds, my boss started showing up at the company less frequently. I called and texted him to remind him about the debt, but he kept delaying—promising to pay in a week, then three weeks, but he never followed through. This dragged on for six months. Overwhelmed by frustration and the financial strain of such a large sum relative to my income, I resigned. Since then, he has ignored all my calls and messages about the debt. I’m now deeply distressed because this was a significant amount of money that my family had saved over many years, and now, when we need funds for family matters, we’re left with nothing. Meanwhile, my boss lives in a grand house, owns a large factory, and runs a substantial company. His siblings are also well-known entrepreneurs in the industry. Yet, he has the audacity to turn his back on me, defaulting on the debt and leaving me to quit in frustration. What should I do?
